Run before you fight
Fight before you injure
Injure before you maim
Maim before you kill
(an old Shaolin edict)
The essence of this saying is that when one chooses to protect oneself, he must do so using only the minimum amount of force and severity necessary to achieve that goal. 
Do not impose your will on others. Respect for others is the first rule in life and in the martial arts.
